Axis is the first roman coin in bronze. Appeared in Rome and Southern Italy from the 4th century BC and, initially, its weight of 327 grams corresponded to that of pound. The aes grave, for its size, was obtained with the system of fusion, as evidenced clearly the exemplar shown here.
This coin, with a weight of 288,30 grams, shows on the obverse Giano's head, while on the reverse the bow of a ship, perhaps remembering Rome's victory in Anzio, in 338 BC.
