Roman medallions, with commemorative function used as gift, were given off by authority of the emperor or his relatives. They are bigger and heavier than normal coins, with complex images, very detailed, which prove a higher possibility in iconography than official coins production.
Medallions can be made of bronze, silver or gold. This specimen belongs to Philippus the Arab, roman emperor between 244 and 249 AD, who is depicted on the obverse with a laurel crown and an armor. On the reverse three personifications of the Coin (gold, silver and bronze) with scale and a cornucopia. Above them small piles of metals. The legend AEQVITAS AVGVSTI and the scale indicate the imperial care in coin weight, than the cornucopia fertility and wealth.
