Aureus of Diocletian

Gaius Valerius Diocletianus, born to a family of low status, came to the heighest role in the army and was a roman emperor since 284 to 305 AD. Man keen on roman traditions and customs, he tried to set up the army in a new way, but with no great success. He modified roman provinces setting, created a new financial reform, and another one about coins and in 301 AD made a law about prices, in order to stop prices increasing. Lastly, he fighted against Christians with hard measures.

Both sides of the coin have emperor's figure with a laurel crown: on the obverse his head, on the reverse the emperor on a quadriga. Letters TR indicate the mint of Treviri.
