Aureus of Gneus Pompeus

This aureus was issued by Pompey, called Pompey the Great (Rome 106- Pelusio, Egypt, 48 BC), a skilled politician and valiant roman general. On the obverse appears the head of the Africa personification perhaps in reference to his victories in Africa, between 80 and 72 BC, against the followers of Mario. The lituus and jug are explicable to the Pompey office as augur.

More info

On the reverse Pompeus is depicted on a quadriga, holding a branch. Over him a flying Victory while is giving a crown to the horses and above the first of them a small male figure, may be the elder son of Pompeus. The legend PROCOS suggests a coin dating around 71 BC, because Pompeus was made proconsul in 72 BC, while some years before in the 81 BC was named Magnus.
