Silver didrachm of Taranto

This silver didracma was issued by the mint of Taranto, important city of Magna Graecia which adopted, for the obverse, the type of knight, in reference to the famous cavalry of Taranto who distinguished itself in fights with the surrounding populations.

On the reverse side there is a young man on a dolphin: some people think about Taras, connected to name of the city, others consider it the representation of the spartan hero Phalantos. Legends indicate names of two magistrates and city's name.
