Silver stater of Corinto

The stater shown here was issued from Corinth, the Greek city that between 550 and 350 BC assumed a key role in the history, becoming the antagonist of Athens in foreign policy and for the control of trade.

More info

On the obverse there is Pegasus, symbol of the city, the winged-horse which let Bellerofontes kill the Chimera and win Amazones. After Bellerofontes' death, Pegasus came to the Olympus, to service Zeus. On the reverse side there is Athena's head, with corinthian helmet, and behind her a small Artemis, running to the left, with a torch. Corinthian coins, called "pegasi", were widespread in greek world and were reproduced by other mints.
