Silver tetradrachm of Leontini

Leontini, city of Sicily close to Syracuse, issued this extraordinary coin depicting on the obverse the head of Apollo adorned with a laurel crown in triple order of leaves and, on the reverse, a lion's head, with open jaws, surrounded by four grains of barley.

More info

The lion, symbol of Apollo, was venerate in Leontini, and it's probably linked to the city's name, instead of grains of barley which indicate hearth fertility.
