Silver didrachm of Thebe

The silver didracma shown here was issued by the city of Thebes, in Boeotia, at the end of the 5th century BC; on the obverse appears a Boeotian shield whose shape, with indentations at the center, allowing to the fighter to have a clear view.

The shield was the symbol of the beothic league founded around the half of 6th century BC by some cities, as Thebe, which quickly reached a great importance. On the reverse side there is an amphora and the greek letter Θ, first letter of the city's name.
