During the Imperial period, in the gems production, is given an increasing importance to the material, to the detriment of the carving quality; the engraved stones gradually lose their seal value and are searched only for ornamental purposes.
During 3rd and 4th century AD engravers don't modernize their techniques of motifs. Gems' production become really stylized, as this case: Helios' head is rendered with few masses and face's lines with deep traits.
