Glass dough with comedy mask

One of the favorite themes of glyptics production during Hellenistic period is that of the theater world, especially with the creation of gems inspired by the tragedy and comedy masks. In this piece is depicted the type mask of the "old angry", characterized by wrinkling forehead, high cheekbones and mouth open in the act of shouting.

Since 3rd century BC, glass dough was employed in sigil's production. That means how sigil use was extending to the lower classes, wich employed cheaper materials. This glass dough was made with mould, and alludes throgh colors, shapes, the one more expensive: sometimes they reproduce corniolan-stone or sardonic stone.
