From the 8th century BC, Corinth became one of the most active centers of Greece for the production and exportation of ceramic pottery. Corinthian workshops use a characteristic pale yellow clay, decorated at first in geometric style, but since the last decades of the 8th century BC, the painters developed a figurative style, using the black-figure technique and outlining the silhouette of the figure on the clear bottom of the clay; the internal details of the figures were shown through the incision and the adoption of added colors such as red, purple and white.
This jar, with the characteristic shape of the middle-corinthian period, presents trefoil mouth and flat bottom and is decorated with two rich figured friezes with animals and humans, alternated in the background with filling rosettes.
At the center of the greater frieze, on the body of the vase, is recognizable the potnia theron figure, or madam of animals: a female figure placed between two lions with open jaws. It is a divinity of Asian origin, then identified with persian Artemis, depicted among wild animals, often lions, symbolizing the human domination over nature wild.
Del tipo a fondo largo (broad bottomed). Bocca trilobata corto collo cilindrico, spalla arrotondata, corpo quasi cilindrico, fondo piatto, ansa a nastro sormontante.
