This specimen of Lebes Gamikos, devoid of lid and made in black paint, was produced in a workshop in southern Italy. This is a particular shape of a lebes, traditionally intended for marriage rites and in particular had to contain the water reserved for the purifying bath of the bride.
In imitation of the attic models, also in numerous workshops in southern Italy, from Campania to Apulia, was produced, from the end of the 5th century BC the black painted pottery, characterized, according to the attic prototypes, with a black and shiny coating. Despite being a product of value, represented a less expensive variant of figurative ceramics and was gradually implemented in a variety of original forms that met great diffusion and fortune. Widely attested in urban and funeral areas, soon spread also in the Apulian and Lucan indigenous world, where were also implanted productive workshops.
