The vases with polychrome figures in relief begin to be produced in Athens at the end of the 5th century BC, to satisfy a tired taste of the only red figures productions.
In this particular type of ceramic the colors were laid on the vase only after cooking and this makes them particularly delicate and difficult to preserve. The vases in relief, depending on the shape, were used as balsamaries, to contain unguents and precious perfumes, or in funerary function, or were used during Anthesteria, feasts in honor of Dionysus, which took place between the 11th and 13th of the Anthesterion month (February-March). It is the case of our chous, a small jug on which Dionysus child is portrayed wielding just a jug with a shape similar to chous and a bunch of grapes.
