Greek vases collection
From the end of the 7th century BC, in Athens develops the production of vases decorated with black figures, in imitation of contemporary Corinthian production. Soon, however, the attic potters abandon geometric and floreal motifs to give more space to the representations of the human figure and mythological themes; in a short time these vases spread not only on the greek market, but also along the main Mediterranean shipping routes up to Etruria and reaching in the east the Black Sea shores.
This amphora is a fine example of the typical production of Nikosthenes, an attic potter active between the third quarter-century and the end of the 6th century BC, which starts a special vases production with a peculiar shape in imitation of metal containers. Nikosthenes was ceramist and painter at the same time and his productions found great favor in Etruria, where were found the majority of the specimens attributed to him.
The amphora attribution to Nikosthenes is certain, thanks to an inscription in Greek characters, visible in the first band: "Nikosthénes (mi) fece"
L’anfora è un bell’esemplare della tipica produzione di Nikosthénes, un vasaio attico attivo tra il terzo venticinquennio e la fine del VI sec. a. C., che avvia una produzione speciale di vasi dalla peculiare sagoma ad imitazione dei recipienti in metallo. Nikosthénes fu ceramista e pittore al tempo stesso e le sue produzioni trovarono grande favore in Etruria, da dove proviene la maggior parte degli esemplari a lui attribuiti.
La decorazione dell’anfora è suddivisa in fasce che recano per lo più motivi geometrici e vegetali, palmette e fiori di loto; da notare, nella prima fascia, il fregio di animali feroci con preziosi ritocchi in paonazzo e bianco e sulle anse le due figure di Menadi danzanti.
L’attribuzione dell’anfora a Nikosthénes è certa, grazie alla presenza di un’iscrizione in caratteri greci, visibile all'altezza della prima fascia: “Nikosthénes (mi) fece”.
