Attic black-figure pelike

On the main side, in the middle, is depicted Dionysus surrounded by vine leaves, holds the kantharos, the cup with two handles with high stem that is almost constant attribute of the god; on the left Athena, recognizable by the attic type helmet, is sitting on a stool; Heracles on the other side, sitting on an identical support, wearing Leontè, the skin of the Nemean lion, invincible beast that the hero strangled with his bare hands.

On the other side is a music contest: a men in a white chiton is standing on a podium and is playing a kithara, an instrument with seven cords, main feature of Apollo, as protector of music. Next to him two judges with a cloack seated on foldable stools. 
The amphora is assigned to the group of the painter Nikoxenos, who is known for its black-figure tecnique and the following red-figure one.
