The depiction on the two sides of the vase was due to a unitary story: the representation of a musical competition highlights.
There is an aulòs musician on a podium with a young singer, and beside them two Nikai who are flying to the centre in order to give an award to the winners. Perhaps the krater was made for a dithyramb competition, a dionisiac type of song for the Great Dionysia, an annual event in Athens at the end of March. On the other side of the krater there is Dionysus and two characters of the thyasos, a satyr and a menad, also a tripod, the award for the winning chorus of the competition, and two Nikai, one of them bringing a bull for the sacrifice.
The krater is depicted also in a paint of 1712 made as a gift for Luigi Ferdinando Marsili's collection for the Science Institution's foundation.
