Campanian aryballic red-figure lèkythos

The lekythos is a vase with a narrow neck, elongated body and with a single handle on the back; was used as a container for oils and unguents, probably even for domestic use; but the greatest testimonies concerning the world of fitness, where served to contain the oil to sprinkle the body of the athletes, and the funeral contest, where it was used for ceremonies in honor of the dead.

In Magna Graecia this type of lèkythos had a great success. It has a larger body, a wide base, as in this example, maybe made by the Caivano's Painter, a painter of 330 - 310 BC. The decoration is about dionysiac or genre paintings. Here three characters: a woman, wearing a himation, sitting on a rock and holding a mirror. In front of her a young man with weapons and on the opposite sidea woman is coming, bringing a phiale.
