This specimen represents the bust of the emperor Maurizio, with a crown, holding a golbe with a cross and a shield. On the reverse we can see a little cross above the letter M, wich indicates the value of 40 nummi of the coin, called follis.
On th eright part there is the letter 'y', which indictaes the 5th year of government of Maurizio, so the coin was made around 586 - 587 AD. The legend NIKO expresses the mint of Nicomedia.
