Lucanian red-figure bell krater

The krater is part of the late production of a vase painter from the workshops of Metapontum, the Creusa Painter, who was active in the early decades of the 4th century.

More info

In terms of the form of the vase and the decorative style, the activity of this artist was still strongly influenced by the Attic tradition, although the lack of attention to detail – particularly in the rendering of the facial features and hair, the manneristic style of the drapery and the poverty of the subjects – anticipated the lower-quality production that would follow, characteristic of the towns of the Lucanian hinterland as of the mid-4th century BC.

Provenance: University Collection (formerly the Marsili Collection)
Datation: Around 370 BC
Material: Clay
