Statue of Aphrodite crouching

The goddess, of which is not preserved the head, is depicted crouching, with the right thigh adherent to the calf and with the gluteus pressed on the heel. The metallic modern support does to join the knee to the basic plan:in ancient should be instead slightly lifted from the ground, as documented by other replicas of the Roman period. The bust, bent forward with shoulders rotated to the left, was partially covered by crossed arms, evoking quite closely the scheme of the original statue, in bronze, created by the sculptor Doidalsas, around the middle of the third century BC.

More info

Aphrodite is depicted while is doing a daily activity and ordinary for greek women, who shave themselves in small tasks with the help of a maid. The opus was extremely popular with the Romans and there are countless copies. Here the figure of the goddess appears graceful and harmonious overall, with a delicate, trim silhouette, perhaps the decision of the able copier, who preferred to ignore the baroque exuberance of the original.
