Places / Exhibition rooms / Room VII - Greek and Roman sculpture

This room, dedicated to Greek and Roman sculpture, has maintained its original appearance as the arrangement of busts and portraits on shelves faithfully reflects an 18th-century museographical concept linked to the tradition of great collections.

The sculptures originate in equal measure from the University and Palagi collections; overall, they consist of works produced for the most part in workshops of the Imperial Roman period, both of replicas and re-workings of Greek models, and original public and private portraits.

Among the earliest are sculptures derived from Hellenistic creations; in the latter group, private portraits constitute the most important group, ranging chronologically from the Julian and Claudian era to the 4th century ad. The presence of some pseudo-antique pieces – modern works imitating originals – is notable; these provide an interesting example of the revival of interest in Antiquity that was so far-reaching in the 16th and 17th century.
