Library / History

The Museum Library, founded in 1904, was initially addressed to scholars, providing them with tools and resources for historical research.

In 1915, a few weeks after the outbreak of the First World War, the museum began collecting materials relating to the conflict. Analogously, during the period of Fascism - albeit with somewhat diminished determination - the museum collected materials documenting the Impresa di Fiume (attempted annexation of the Croatian city of Rijeka), the colonial wars, the Spanish Civil War, and the Second World War.

In 1954, the Museum was given the name "Museo civico del primo e secondo Risorgimento", drawing an ideal connection between Italian Unification and the Italian Resistance Movement, in keeping with the prevailing spirit of the times. Books and documents relating to the corresponding historical period were thus added to the collection. In 1958, the period of interest was extended to embrace the 18th-century reform movements, bringing in additional materials.
