Already in 1400, Bologna was the city of the violin makers. Before the famous lutes ( you will find a whole family in room 5), then the violins , with luthiers as Marks and Tononi.
But it was in '900 that the construction of stringed instruments born in Bologna, with Gaetano Pollastri and especially with Otello Bignami director of the School of Artistic Violin Making of Bologna: in a room of the museum was rebuilt his workshop of Via Guerrazzi 10, from which most of luthiers active today in the city.
