Introduction

With the opening of the Civico Museo in 1881, the holdings of the University and Palagi collections were displayed in the first rooms of the museum (II to IX), dedicating room VI to the “Greek monuments”. The transfer of the Egyptian collection to the basement and the successive restructuring of the rooms, terminated in December 2005, has enabled changes to be made to the 19th-century layout, renewing the interiors of the existing display cases, but retaining the original structure intact, thus offering a space that is better suited to the collection’s masterpiece, the head of Lemnian Athena, now flanked by items from a broader chronological range (jewellery, cameos and coroplastic works).
The collection is strongest above all in Greek and Italian ceramics and to a lesser extent in marble statuary, reliefs, terracotta, jewellery and engraved gems. These in large part derive from the Palagi collection and from the original nuclei forming the basis of the University collection.
