Mummy of a cat

In Egypt the practice of mummification was also extended to those animals, called sacred, in which could incarnate some deity. This is the reason why there are Egyptian necropolis entirely dedicated to ibis, baboons, cats, crocodiles etc., whose mummies have been found in thousands.

More info

The cat is associated with the goddess Bastet, whose cult centre was at Bubastis in the Delta, but there were other feline deities elsewhere in Egypt.
