Bes was a god much loved by the Egyptians: is represented as a grotesque dwarf with exaggerated head, lion's mane and animal tail.
His monstrous appearance served to keep out the poisonous reptiles, to ensure sleep from the attacks of evil spirits and, in particular, to protect pregnant women.
