This specimen, one of the latest varieties of several “globular incense burners” discovered inside the lavish sepulchres of Bologna between the late 8th century and the early 7th century B.C. and attested by archaeological findings even in Tyrrhenian Etruria, is characterised by its large size but, in particular, by its plastic decoration with lotus flowers, decorative elements distinctive of the recurrent Orientalising motif.
As an alternative, the body of the incense burner is adorned with meander and wolf tooth patterns etched on the surface, distinctive of the Central European tradition, thus demonstrating how practices that depended on different cultural areas were simultaneously assimilated in Bologna.
