Introduction

The epigraphic collection is situated in the entrance hall and the courtyard of the Museum. It is composed of a large number of stone monuments from Bologna and its environs, from the University and Palagi Collections. The current layout of the Epigraphic Collection is essentially the same as it was when it was rearranged in 1956 by G. Susini and R. Pincelli. The entrance hall contains the most characteristic inscriptions, objects from Bologna are to the right of the entrance and those from the surrounding area are to the left. In the courtyard there are milestones from the Via Aemilia, several stelae from the "Reno wall" and other connected to the public life of the Roman period of Bononia.
The objects are very different in type, form, provenance, chronology and, above all, their original function. They include architectural elements from civic and funerary buildings, public inscriptions, milestones, tablets with public inscriptions, cineray urns, tabellae and burial stelae and sculptures in the round.
