Collections / Sections / Roman collection

Introduction

The holdings consist of items from the collections of the University and of the Bolognese painter, Palagio Pelagi.
The layout, which like the other sections had remained the same since its inauguration in 1881, was renewed in 2009. In line with the museum’s museographical tradition, the 19th-century display cases were preserved to maintain the appearance of one of the last important post-unification museographical examples in Italy, but the interiors were completely renewed to render the articles on display more visible and practical for the public.
It was decided to adopt a thematic approach for the display that could facilitate a reading of items that are not immediately comprehensible, but which would at the same time revive something of the collection’s original spirit. In the three large display cabinets dominating the room, the items have been distributed to document some aspects of everyday public and private life. This decision has necessarily required a careful selection of the material compared to the earlier display; in order not to cancel out the original appearance of the section entirely, and so as not to lose the quantitative significance of the collection, some panels with the arrangement in series of typological and functionally similar items have been placed in the upper part of the cabinets.
