The pair of bronze handles depicting wrestlers decorated a bronze dish, as can be seen in the only complete item of a series found in the Gallic tomb of St Paolina di Filottrano, in the Marches.
There were two versions of these dishes – with wrestlers and with warriors – and were probably produced in the Adriatic area for export not only to Italy but also across the Alps to France and Germany, like other luxury items produced on the Italian peninsula.
