Production of so-called bucchero pesante flourished in Etrurian towns in the centre-north (e.g. Chiusi, Orvieto). This pottery has thick walls and the moulded decoration is often baroque and overabundant; in later examples it is grey.
This large group of heavy bucchero pots was recently acknowledged as coming from a rich Chiusi chamber tomb, whose grave goods included about one hundred pots.
The earthenware must have come from a Chiusi workshop but it bears strong affinities to Orvieto products. Models and casts for decoration circulated between the two towns, with craftsmen sharing experience. This reflection of deep bonds culminated in the decades that followed with Porsenna’s domination of both towns.
