In ideological systems that could be quite different from each other, depending on the period, the Etruscan and Italic communities gave great importance to collective consumption of wine and meat, regulated by precise rituals that derived mainly from the Near East and Greek cultures.
Convivial gatherings reinforced the bonds amongst members of the same family, or social or political circles, and even had sacred meanings. The banquet and the symposium were significant moments for the living and also became the centre of attention for funeral rituals, with grave goods and decorations often referring to these ceremonies
