The courtyard also contains the museum’s carved stone collection collection; some important traces of Bologna’s Roman history and numerous epigraphs from the University collection are arranged along the walls beneath the portico.
The western side presents some Roman milestones from the via Aemilia and a series of stelae bearing family names of Etruscan origin.
On the left (northern) side of the portico, the visitor will see the stelae from the so-called “River Reno wall”, a dam built in late Antiquity using stelae taken from a nearby disused Roman necropolis along the via Aemilia.
The eastern wing of the courtyard is reserved for inscriptions dealing with the Roman city’s public life, imperial inscriptions and casts of graffiti found within the Augustinian aqueduct.
